As Organic Lifestyle is based in Ontario, Canada, we're always on the look out for #MadeinCanada goods. To be honest, it's been hard to source products that we feel our customers would consider 'reasonably' priced.

So I'm glad we connected with Upper Canada Fibre Shed, who introduced us to The Schill Family:

  • 4th and 5th generations in the family working on their Wellington County farm, ethically raising sheep and lamb.
  • Manage their land in an environmentally sustainable way by using, no-till, minimum till, crop rotations, manure and fertilizer.
  • Grow most of the feed (like hay, grass forages, corn, wheat and barley) that their animals eat.
  • Animal care - use hormones & antibiotics in a responsible and respectable manner in consultation with a vet and an animal nutritionist. Antibiotics are used if a sheep gets sick and needs treatment.
  • Healthy soils = quality crops = quality feeds = healthy sheep.

Wool treatment: While their wool isn't certified organic, the wool is simply washed with an environmentally friendly biodegradable soap and hand made into pillows by the Schills

  • The raw wool is grown and processed in Ontario, Canada.
  • Washed using linear alcohol detergents that are listed on the US EPA’s Cleangredients® database.
  • Once washed and dried it gets carded with a giant wool brush so all the fibres are lined up to make a lofty batting.
  • The pillow may have a unique scent - This is lanolin, the sheep’s natural oil. You can always add a few drops of essential oil like lavender which blends nicely with the lanolin to create a relaxing aromatherapy like experience.

By sourcing locally, we're helping to support the local economy and reducing transport related carbon emissions.

Why wool?

  • Helps to naturally regulate body temperature.
  • A natural dustmite resistant alternative.

Tip - If you feel that it's 'overstuffed' when you first get it, put the pillow underweight (eg., place underneath your sofa or bed) for up to 2 weeks to ensure it uniformly compresses quickly.
