Spot Clean as needed.
Natural Rubber Foam Latex - Shredded Washable IF PRODUCT DESCRIPTION INDICATES PILLOW IS WASHABLE, then both shredded core and cover can be washed.

We highly recommend you add a strong safety pin the zipper head to the seam of the pillow to avoid any shredded rubber filling spilling out.

Wash in cold, gentle cycle, squeeze excess water out and hang to air dry.

Ensure it dries completely.
Organic Cotton Do not wash. Spot Clean as needed.
Kapok

Do not wash. Spot Clean as needed.

Kapok can clump up but generally does not. If it does, it's easy to fix the problem - All you have to do is open the zipper and separate clumps by hand. Then to fluff up the pillow, put it in the dryer for 20 minutes on hot and shake it out after that. You may need to repeat this in the future if the kapok clumps together again.

Buckwheat Do not wash. Spot Clean as needed.
PLA Every washer and dryer are different, but if the instructions are followed, both shredded core and cover are washable. We recommend fluffing it a few times manually to help distribute the filling and insure more even drying during the dryer cycle.
Else lumps are likely as a result if you're not getting the pillow thoroughly dry. Hang to dry.

So you are curious about ILD ....

The most important things to consider:

Match the ILD to the material - Rubber (Latex), Polyurethane Foam, Memory Foam are 3 different types of materials, they would have much different reading of ILD.

eg.,

  • Temperpedic mattress (I'm not sure but I think its made of Polyurethane Foam?) is 14 - 15 ILD
  • Essentia (proprietary Memory foam) is between 10 - 16 ILD
  • Organic Lifestyle (Rubber) extra firm mattress is 85 ILD

We have provided the ILD for our rubber foam (latex) based pillows, toppers and mattresses on their respective product descriptions.

General ILD chart for Rubber Latex:

ILD for rubber (latex) Organic Lifestyle Products

Very Soft 40 Contour & solid rubber foam pillow (Which you need for a human head)
Soft 60 Mattress Foam rubber Topper option available
Medium 75 Rubber mattress option available
Firm 85 Rubber mattress option available
Extra firm 95

What is ILD?

  • ILD/IFD, which are interchangable terms for the ability of a foam to push back against force. (The letters stand for Impression Load Deflection/Impression Force Deflection, in case you were curious.)
  • ILD is measured by taking a disc and pressing into the foam. The more strength the foam has to push the disc back up is its ILD, which is stated as a number value. The higher the number, the stronger the push, so a 30 ILD is stronger than a 15 ILD
  • ILD determines how easily a foam will shape to your body and how much support it is capable of giving. Very low ILD foams are wonderfully cushy on the body, but provide very little support

  • Kiln-dried Spruce wood frame
  • 2-inch wide slats are spaced are spaced 2-inches apart
  • Total foundation height available in 7" OR 4"

The wood used is produced in Quebec through a sustainable harvesting method called "jardinage." This method is a selective process in which a government-trained forestry specialist inspects trees in designated areas. The age and number of trees per acre that can be harvested are specified. Once approval for cutting has been given, other forestry personnel inspect the cutting operation to protect the forest from intrusive damage. If damage is found, it must be rectified immediately to restore balance.

Caring for your organic mattress
Refreshing the appearance of your organic mattress

Can I use a boxspring for my rubber mattress? What type of foundation is required for a rubber mattress?
What about if I have a platform bed?

Caring for your organic mattress
Vacuum and air your mattress and foundation regularly to help its natural fibers breathe. Without proper ventilation, the foam rubber in particular may dry out and affect its overall softness & longevity.

Protect the integrity of your bedding by always using a mattress pad.

Encourage even wear by turning your mattress regularly. Every two weeks for the first two months, alternate turning your mattress end to end and flipping it. Then turn it every 4-6 months. For safety, always have 2 people turn the mattress. Do not use mattress handles to lift the mattress, as they will detach. Use handles only to guide the mattress into place.

Refreshing the appearance of your organic mattress
An easy, natural way to revive the beauty of your mattress is spot cleaning with a solution of 1:3 parts white distilled vinegar and water. Spray the solution on the spot, then expose it to direct sunlight until the stain fades and any scent of the vinegar disappears. Make sure the mattress is entirely dry before returning it to use.

If you prefer to use a non-toxic spot cleaner, follow the manufacturer's directions and make sure the cleaner dries completely before you use your mattress.

Simple steps to care for your organic mattress and bedding will keep its promise to you of bringing many years of luxurious, healthful rest for body and spirit.

How about a foam rubber mattress in a high moisture/ high humidity environments?
Foam rubber is quite tolerant in humid environments and will last long in these climates as long as its allowed to breathe. Since the rubber arrives in a vegetable grade plastic bag, be sure to take it out to breath as soon as possible.

Can I use a boxspring for my Foam rubber mattress? What type of foundation is required for a Foam rubber mattress?

If considering a Foam rubber mattress and planning to use your existing wood slat foundation, please ensure the slats are no more than 2" apart and will provide uniform support and ventilation.

Thus, boxspring foundations are not recommended for use with Foam rubber mattress (as it doesn't allow for proper air circulation)

What about if I have a platform bed?
If considering a Foam rubber mattress with a solid wood platform foundation, you will need to drill holes about 1" diameter [the size of a Canadian $1 coin] every 12 square inches uniformly throughout the platform to ensure provide uniform support and ventilation.
