Food-Grade Polyethylene (Waterproof models only - patent pending)
Naturepedic uses only Food-Grade Polyethylene (meets food contact standards), creating a high quality non-toxic and waterproof mattress cover. Polyethylene is easy-to-clean and highly stain resistant while providing an excellent barrier to dust mites and other allergens.
Polyethylene is an environmentally friendly plastic that is used throughout the food packaging industry for its purity and non-toxic properties. It has a very simple molecular structure that does not require chemical additives (as opposed to vinyl/PVC) and is favored by environmental groups all over the world.
Should you be concerned about Polyethylene or polyurethane? No, but read Live Toxic free advocate, Debra Lynn Dadd's response on whether polyurethane is safe
Certified Organic Cotton
Organic cotton is the purest form of cotton, grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or GMO’s (genetically modified organisms). In mattresses, organic cotton is a healthier alternative to foams (which are chemically treated) and latex (which can be allergy-prone). Naturepedic uses only U.S. grown and certified organic cotton and provide a healthy and comfortable sleep environment.
The organic cotton filling used by Naturepedic is certified by the Texas Department of Agriculture. The certification standard includes:
- NO synthetic pesticides
- NO synthetic fertilizers
- NO genetically modified organisms
- NO carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic chemicals
- NO endocrine disruptors
- NO non-biodegradable detergents, degreasers, or surfactants
- NO chlorine bleach
- NO plastisols
- NO other synthetic chemicals
Heavy Duty Orthopedic Innerspring
Naturepedic uses only the highest quality innersprings available. Steel springs are readily recyclable and provide heavy duty support without any health or allergy concerns. Our flagship crib innerspring features 252 coils at 15.5 gauge with 9 gauge border wire and additional 9 gauge center reinforcement (a Naturepedic exclusive). Our 150 coil innerspring features 13 gauge coils with 9 gauge border wire.
Note: Beware of advertisements for “coil count.” This figure does not give the actual number of coils in the mattress, but rather the number of coils in an equivalent full size mattress.
No Flame Retardant Chemicals or Barriers Needed
Use materials such as organic cotton fabric, organic cotton batting, plant-based non-GMO PLA batting, and steel innersprings in place of memory foam, other forms of polyurethane foam and synthetic fabrics that have much higher fuel loads.
These materials tend to smolder instead of bursting into flames with very high heat release. This unique and innovative approach provides a simple and elegant solution that meets all US Federal and State flammability standards without the need for any fire retardant chemicals or flame retardant barriers.
Aren’t You Required to Have Flame Retardants By Law?
This is a common misconception. Naturepedic mattresses have passed all State and Federal testing, but there is no requirement to use a flame barrier to do so.
So why don’t we shorten that to “No flame retardants added” and call it a day? That would mean the same thing, right? Wrong. Read how Naturepedic ensures there are NO harmful chemicals anywhere in their mattresses.
To confirm, Naturepedic does not use any of the following fire retardants:
- NO PBDEs
- NO Brominated or Chlorinated Fire Retardants
- NO Antimony
- NO PAN (polyacrylonitrile)
- NO Modacrylic
- NO Dimethyl Sulfate
- NO Boric Acid
- NO Respirable Crystaline Silica
- NO Allergenic Materials (i.e. Wool)
