Natural latex is a very common core material for mattresses. It provides elasticity, durability, resilience, and support. Unfortunately, some people can be sensitized to this material. While potential allergic reactions vary from person to person, they are undoubtfully unpleasant.

Natural latex can cause two primary types of allergies: Type I and Type IV reactions. Type I is an immediate reaction to the protein in the latex, and it can be potentially life-threatening. Symptoms usually appear rapidly and may include hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, asthma and abdominal pain. The most severe form of latex allergy can lead to anaphylactic shock and even to a fatality, but it is extremely rare. Type IV is a delayed reaction to chemicals used in the manufacturing process. It can cause a mild skin reaction or a very unpleasant, itchy and blistering rash. Symptoms of this reaction can occur minutes or hours after the exposure.

Can you be allergic to wool? Some people can be sensitive to the texture of wool. Wool garments can cause skin irritation due to coarse fibers protruding from the fabric. Babies and children can be more susceptible to skin irritations as their skin barrier is thinner and more sensitive.
